Microsoft Authenticator users were given a warning to save their passwords before the company begins phasing out its password management system on Sunday (June 1), Bleeping Computer reports.
"Autofill via Authenticator ends in July 2025," a Microsoft Authenticator notification sent on Thursday (May 29) stated.
The free mobile app, which enhances the security of a user's online accounts for apps and websites with two-factor authentication and autofilling passwords, will stop saving new passwords as Microsoft shifts password management to its Edge browser. The autofill function in Authenticator will be disabled before July 1 and all saved payment information, such as credit card details, will be deleted.
"You can export your saved info (passwords only) from Authenticator until Autofill ends. Access your passwords and addresses via Microsoft Edge at any time," the warning stated. "To keep autofilling your info, turn on Edge or other provider."
Microsoft specified that the payment data won't be automatically transferred from Authenticator to Edge, so it must be entered manually by the user. All saved passwords will be completely removed from the Authenticator app before August, according to the company.
Microsoft said all users who wish to keep using their saved passwords and logins must download Microsoft Edge on their phones and electronic devices that currently use Authenticator moving forward. The company intends to streamline password access and autofill across all platforms through Microsoft Edge's integrated password manager.
